Ingredients

Dry ingredients
  • 1.5 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 tsp baking powder
  • 1 tsp cinnamon
  • 0.25 tsp nutmeg
  • 0.25 tsp salt
Wet ingredients and mix-ins
  • 0.5 cup unsalted butter melted
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 0.5 cup brown sugar packed
  • 2 eggs
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 2 cup apples peeled and finely diced
  • 0.5 cup walnuts or pecans chopped (optional)
Caramel drizzle
  • 0.25 cup caramel sauce

Equipment

  • 1 sheet pan

Method

Prep and bake
  1. Preheat the oven to 350F and grease a 9x13 baking pan with a light coating for easy release.
  2. Whisk all-purpose flour, baking powder, cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt together until evenly combined.
  3. Whisk melted unsalted butter and granulated sugar with brown sugar until smooth, then whisk in eggs and vanilla until fully incorporated.
  4. Fold the flour mixture into the wet mixture until just combined to keep the brownies fudgy.
  5. Fold in diced apples and walnuts or pecans (if using) until distributed throughout with no dry flour pockets.
  6. Spread the batter evenly in the prepared pan and bake for 30-35 minutes, until a toothpick comes out with just a few moist crumbs.
Cool and finish
  1. Cool the brownies in the pan before slicing to help them set for clean squares.
  2. Drizzle the caramel sauce over the top before cutting into squares so it settles on the warm surface.

Notes

Pro tip: fold just until no streaks of flour remain—overmixing can make these less dense. Store airtight in the refrigerator for up to 4 days; the caramel drizzle is best after cooling. Freeze baked brownies (without extra caramel) for up to 2 months, thaw in the fridge overnight. For a lightly lower-sugar option, reduce granulated sugar to 3/4 cup and keep the packed brown sugar for moisture.
